Chocolate Sugar Cookies

Chocolate sugar cookies are irresistible on their own, without any mix-ins or frosting. The melted vegetable shortening or unsalted butter gives them a pleasantly unbeatable texture.

All purpose flour 1½ cups
Unsweetened cocoa powder ½ cup
Baking powder 1 tsp
Salt ½ tsp
Unsalted butter, rm temp ½ cup
Sugar 1 cup
Vegetable shortening ½ cup
OR unsalted butter,
melted & cooled
Egg 1 large
Vanilla extract 1½ tsp



  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and line baking sheets with parchment paper.

  • Whisk together flour, cocoa powder, and salt.

  • Mix butter and sugar on medium-high speed until pale and fluffy. Mix in melted shortening or butter. Add egg and vanilla extract. Continue mixing until creamy.

  • Gradually add flour mixture and mix on low speed until just combined.

  • Drop dough by tablespoonfuls onto prepared baking sheets, spacing about 2 inches apart.

  • Bake for about 18 – 20 minutes or until edges are firm. Let cookies cool on sheets on wire racks. Store chocolate sugar cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
