Homemade Chocolate Desserts

Writing about chocolate desserts reminds me of a spelling trick I’ve learned as a kid.

Dessert is a sweet treat after a meal. It’s delicious and kids may want a second serving. Therefore, it is spelled with 2 “Ses.”

Desert, on the other hand, is not eatable and thus spelled with just 1 “S.”

I can’t also help thinking of rich rocky road brownies and flavorful rocky road chocolate chip cookies as popular chocolate desserts.

Ingredients for the brownies are:

Ingredients for chocolate desserts

Unsalted butter 6 Tbsp
Unsweetened chocolate, coarsely chopped 2 oz.
Semisweet chocolate chips ¼ cup
Granulated sugar 2/3 cup
Eggs 2 large
All purpose flour ¾ cup
Salt ½ tsp
Butterscotch chips ½ cup
Pecans, chopped ½ cup
Miniature marshmallows 1¼ cups
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and line a 9×9-inch baking pan with aluminum foil.

  • Melt butter, unsweetened chocolate and 2 tablespoons semisweet chocolate chips over low heat or in a double boiler, stirring frequently. Remove from heat and let cool for 15 minutes.

  • Beat sugar and eggs together until frothy. Add the cooled chocolate mixture and incorporate well.

  • Combine flour and salt together, then sift it directly into the chocolate mixture. Mix gently until just combined and there is no visible trace of dry ingredients.

  • Spread half of the batter evenly into the prepared baking pan. Bake for approximately 12 minutes.

  • Meanwhile, manually stir butterscotch chips, pecans, marshmallows, remaining chocolate chips into the other half of the batter.

  • Remove the partially-baked brownies batter from the oven after 12 minutes. Spread the other half of the batter along with all the add-ins evenly over it.

  • Continue baking for another 15 minutes.

  • Remove from oven and cool completely on a wire rack. Cut into desired serving-size squares.

To turn this brownie recipe into one for chocolate chip cookies, you would need similar ingredients in different proportions.

    Mini chocolate chips 1 cup
    Butterscotch chips 1 cup
    Pecans, chopped 1 cup
    Miniature marshmallows 1 cup
